TRYHARDER: summer book club

A Short Life of Trouble: Forty Years in the New York Art World

TRYHARDER has been on the hunt for some interesting, non-snooze-inducing summer art reading. Generally, the big corporate chains haven't been having much of an art criticism selection in stock so I popped into the bookstore over at the Space15Twenty. Very substantial assortment and on par with the Hammer bookstore. I was also in Malibu yesterday and stopped into some random bookstore where you know, the celebs go to get all their books - as I was hoping TMZ would finally snap TRYHARDER, but they had a book about the first woman curator of The Whitney Museum, Marcia Tucker. The cover caught my attention - biker, chic, NY and oh yeah...trouble!

“With Children of The Revolution I started thinking about this idea of education and teaching and “passing the torch.” I went to UCLA and studied with Chris Burden, Paul McCarthy, Charlie Ray and Roger Herman. I feel that they’ve all been very influential on my practice. I always think about that “brotherhood” and the responsibility of sharing the information. Like the SKULL AND BONES Society at Yale, that secret brotherhood that a lot of big time politicians have been a members of, I sort of think about this brotherhood as being akin to that. A secret society where we share and pass on information that manifests itself in our works but that the general public is not really privy too.”

TRYHARDER camera-drive

This brings me to a good time to mention that my camera is dying. TRYHARDER prides itself on nice, big, juicy pics of LA art openings but my digital camera—whose working life has spanned documenting the detroit art scene, europe, the middle east, berlin's art scene and now onto LA—is on its last legs. It has seen a lot of action during these 4 1/2 years of dedicated art blogging!

So, I've decided to up your viewing pleasure, and to continue the best LA art coverage, I am adding a donate button to raise funds to help with the cost of a new camera. The goal is ~ $500, which is only 17 people donating 30 bucks each! Every donation at that level ($30) or more will receive a limited edition TRYHARDER T-shirt.

I'll continue on with the current camera until this fundraiser is successful. But once the funds are raised, get ready for vastly improved pics! If you can help out, thank you!

**if you live abroad, 40 bucks or more gets you the T-shirt...did i mention they are all artist-made, think conceptual-wearable-art...sounds like fun to me!
