home for the holidays /// is this your new house?

I was back in Detroit over Thanksgiving and was craving some over-due exploration. I would have never posted pics like this before while living in the D but now being out in LA it seemed comforting (and not as terribly cliche) to post. However......a friend of mine did point out that artists here capitalize on immigration/mexican-us relations as much as detroiters live off of their fading ruins. It is pretty strange and sad to be removed and come back to witness even more gorgeous structures becoming enveloped into the land and joining the urban prairie. So that said the reason I had to make this post is because of the above "dwell-ish" house that was newly plopped on to the block of St. Aubin. This was an area I have fond memories of and would drive around often enough to notice the empty plots grow and maybe the serial killers too. So, if this is your recent addition or you know about this structure let me know. You certainly have some balls and creative intentions.

hmmm...maybe I will stay here next time I am looking for a chelsea/gallery central hotel - I will just have to tell my travel mate to not eat so much. hasn't wes anderson found this place yet?

YALE MFA 2010

I love staying updated at the Yale gallery site. They do a great job of documenting the students' works and the talent is always the best of what's coming out of grad programs these days. They share a certain aesthetic of propped-up/leaned-up/deconstructed styling with miz' stockholder on staff. I think a good comparison school and the underdog, in terms of exposure, in the west (compared to calarts) is USC's mfa program.

Of course, the guy has to win it ("it" being the Turner Prize)...

In Leckey’s case, he admits that he’d like to have more exposure in Britain (he shows a lot in mainland Europe, but rarely in the UK), but he’s not interested in commercial gallery or museum exhibitions. ‘I want a TV show’ he said last night. ‘I want to do an art variety programme… like The Two Ronnies, but with art’. ‘Wow’, was the best the astonished interviewer could manage.

The second exhibition in Bondaroff and Al Moran’s groundbreaking O.H.W.O.W. space in the "West of Wynwood" district, this watershed project gets celebrated curators Tim Barber, Kathy Grayson, Andreas Melas, Dan Nadel, Pablo de la Barra, Nicola Vassell and Terence Koh to activate their various teams of artists in a huge multimedia exhibition featuring painting, sculpture, video and performance from artists all over the world with a focus on downtown Manhattan...

miami art basel and the shaky economy

Art Basel Miami Beach and the New Economy: Diminished Expectations or Potential for a New Democracy?

...But is a high octane platform like Art Basel capable of running on cheaper fuel? Because at current prices, galleries cannot continue to rent large booths, ship art, pay for insurance, book hotels and flights and arrange dinners without a strong confidence in market return.
If the fair no longer guarantees an A-list of international collectors, if major Europeans stay away from Miami this year, as many Americans apparently neglected Frieze, FIAC and Berlin in recent months, then ABMB would become both more parochial and less lucrative...

On a side note, I was in an LA boutique about two weeks ago and overheard a prominent LA gallery owner say that they too had just pulled out of Art Miami because it wasn't worth the art sale gamble, extra spenditure, and hassle. He/she made predictions that other art fairs would collapse and the gallery "big-wigs" would soon be making cut-backs.

Plane Landing is a sculpture of an airplane in a permanent state of landing. On July 4 and 5, 2008 Plane Landing appeared at the Zurich Airport as part of the show 'Shifting Identities - (Swiss) Art Now', curated by Mirjam Varadinis for Kunsthaus Zurich.

Too bad, I don't think that this project would "fly" in america. (Just a little grandpa-style holiday travel humor.) I just got into LAX yesterday and would have loved to have seen something like this! But anyway, you can also see other proposed collages of Plane Landing here.

Jo started making these images in 2001, whilst at the Royal College of Art, funding the work and her education by employment as a cleaner at the porn studio. When all was quiet and the bodies had gone home she would photograph the aftermath of the day’s shoots. The resulting works have a stillness to them in complete contrast to the frenetic industry of which they are the traces.
