i went to burningman one year and someone had constructed a large walk-in version of duchamp's fountain. inside was a glowing urinal puck that you could sit on.
at the time it seemed amateurish and trite but compared to this i'm not sure which is the worse as an over simplification of a community.
no doubt it was ripe to be done. i have even spoken to michael smith about the project and appreciate his open-mindedness about the trip and his experience there. he is certainly much more aware of art's complicity than your typical burner... the question is what do you do with this awareness that is more than a raiding of a community's iconography and kitsch?
regardless, i truly appreciate this project by the mikes as it raises many important questions about our artistic identities and desire for progress.

i think i would rather take a bunch of drugs and go to burning man, rather than going to this in pasadena.
sorry.....
